A short but amazing trip
Breakfast was a traditional Japanese one. After the feast last night we weren’t hungry anyway. We checked out 10am, and headed off to explore the Wakasa area in southern Fukui Prefecture, overlooking Wakasa Bay, which features a diverse landscape of sea, mountains and lakes.
We made a few stops to take photos, especially of the clouded skies, which blanketed the surrounding mountains and loomed, almost menacingly over the fishing villages along the way. We took some photos which I hope will give you a better idea of the clouds, rain and landscape.
We checked out the Mikata Five Lakes, which according to the tourist blurbs, all feature a unique topography where freshwater, brackish water, and seawater coexist, separated by inlets and sandbars created by the land and sea. Apparently each one has a different depth and a different level of salt in its water, making each lake a different shade of blue. Unfortunately for us it was too cloudy to see any of the colours mentioned, only the greyish reflection of the clouds
We saw a few flying fish, called tobiuo (pronounced as Tobi-u-o in Japanese). Apparently the flying fish are one of the most fascinating creatures in Japanese waters. It certainly had us on our toes as the fish didn’t let us know when and where they planned to jump!! A bit inconsiderate of them I reckon. We must have waited 15 minutes to get just two photographs of fish breaching. Bit sel fish if you ask me.
We stopped by a fishermen’s wharf as Mami was keen to buy some local fresh seafood to take home for dinner. Fresh fish like this really taste so much better than fish that has been refrigerated.
It took us 1.5 hours to reach a short stop, so we could grab a coffee at Starbacks, which we both needed. Mami then took over and drove us home on the final leg of our trip. She must have been speeding, as it only took an hour to get home. Just kidding, she did a great job.
Both Nana and Yuri were rapt that we had picked up a nice amount of fresh sushi and sashimi for dinner. Fresh fish is just so good and we had no trouble eating everything we had purchased. A perfect way to finish a perfect trip to Fukui
